Life has not been easy for Saniya who was born with Cerebral Palsy in a family with meagre earnings, making it that much harder. Lack of resources and social stigma of raising a girl-child with disability forced her parents to confine Saniya to their house for the first 12 years of her life! Saniya, at the age of 13, came to Samerth Talim Kendra in 2009. She was unable to walk and was dependent on the caregiver for all her needs.
Regular care, attention and physiotherapy sessions brought about a significant change in this young girl. In the initial days, Saniya used to be reluctant to participate in her physiotherapy sessions, but the teachers encouraged her to continue. Soon, the efforts paid off – within a few months, Saniya’s posture markedly improved. Now, she can even sit cross-legged on the floor and has become independent to a certain extent.
For the first time in 2019, Saniya participated in the sports festival organised for the differently-abled participants and even bagged the second prize in the 25 meters running race. It was a very proud moment for her parents. This win not only boosted her confidence and she is more confident in herself and her abilities than before. Saniya now looks forward to her physiotherapy sessions – after all, she wants to fulfill her dream to grab the First Prize in the next sports fest!
