The goal of Samerth is to achieve the universalisation of elementary education through mass mobilization and the people’s participation.
We have focused on training women, empowering the community through RTE and RTI and helped them find their voices in order to demand their rights. Many gender based trainings and capacity building has happened in the work spectrum of Samerth. Many women has overcome the religious barriers and identities to challenge the patriarchy and moved beyond to join hands with create gender justice and violence free environment.
Our intervention has led to support, encouragement and participation of community women in making the duty bearers to be accountable and responsible in providing various services. Due to our relentless campaign for girl child education families have now come forward to educate their girls. When we began work, we’d go requesting people to send their girls to our centers. Today we have a long list of parents who want to enroll their girls in our centers. Schools have come forward to participate in our peace programme and voluntarily offer their premises for different extracurricular activities. (Inter school quiz, sports, and other competitions). Parents have come forward to give their support in cash or kind.
Women treat theses centers as their own spaces. A place where they can come and share their problems. Domestic violence is a common issue in these areas. Women who always bore this silently accepting it as their fate have started talking about it. It started with a trickle and now most women from the community come and share about their troubles – especially in case of domestic violence. In all cases we have taken an initiative to talk to violators either her husband or other members of the family. In most cases the abusers have felt extremely embarrassed and stopped abusing her. In some cases we have had to resort to strong warning of legal action to settle the matter. Abusers are now afraid that women now have a place to go and complain where she will be heard and action will be taken.
Samerth is capacitating the women leaders to develop a cadre of second line so that the women are able to take the reins of their development to develop abilities to identify and address their emerging needs of inequality.
